How Does Pico Tattoo Removal Work?

Tattoo ink sits beneath the surface of the skin.

The Pico laser delivers extremely short pulses of energy that fragment the ink into tiny particles. Your body then gradually processes and clears these particles over time.

The tattoo should fade progressively following each successful treatment.

The response depends on the type and colour of ink, depth, density, location and your individual healing response.

Black and Coloured Tattoo Ink

Black ink often responds well because it absorbs a broad range of laser wavelengths.

Coloured tattoo inks can be more complex. Diﬀerent colours respond to diﬀerent wavelengths, and shades including green, blue, red, orange and yellow may require diﬀerent approaches.

We will assess the colours present before recommending treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

There is no ﬁxed number.

Your tattoo may require more or fewer sessions depending on:

Ink colour
Ink density
Depth of pigment
Professional or amateur application
Tattoo size
Tattoo location
Existing scarring
Previous removal attempts
Your immune and healing response

Treatments are spaced apart to allow the skin to recover and the body time to process fragmented ink.

Tattoo Removal for a Cover-Up

You may not need to remove the entire tattoo.

A course of Pico treatments can lighten dark or dense areas, giving your tattoo artist greater freedom when designing a cover-up.

Tell us during your consultation if your goal is fading rather than full removal.

What Happens After Treatment?

The area may temporarily appear white or frosted immediately after treatment. You may also experience:

Redness
Warmth
Swelling
Tenderness
Small blisters
Pinpoint bleeding
Crusting
Temporary darkening or lightening

Do not pick or remove any crusts or blisters. Following your aftercare advice carefully will support

healing and reduce complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does laser tattoo removal leave a scar?

Correctly performed treatment aims to minimise damage to the surrounding skin. However, all laser procedures carry risks, including scarring and pigment changes. Existing scarring from the original tattoo may also become more visible as the ink fades.

Can you remove a new tattoo?

A new tattoo must heal fully before laser removal can begin. We will assess the area and advise when it is safe to patch test.

How long should I wait between sessions?

Treatment intervals vary, but tattoo sessions are generally spaced several weeks apart. Treating too frequently does not necessarily produce faster clearance and can increase the risk of complications.

Can I remove part of a tattoo?

Yes. We may be able to treat a selected name, symbol, colour or section while leaving the surrounding tattoo intact.

Can you treat tattoos on darker skin?

Treatment may be possible, but there is a greater need for careful wavelength selection, conservative settings and patch testing to reduce the risk of unwanted pigment changes.
