What is Hyperhidrosis?

Everybody sweats; it’s a normal part of how our bodies regulate temperature. However people with hyperhidrosis sweat at levels that are greater than needed to control temperature.

For some people, there may be an underlying medical condition such as diabetes or an overactive thyroid gland. The affected areas may be constantly damp making everyday activities restricted due to the embarrassment in front of friends or colleagues.

Bacteria?

Excessive sweating does not necessarily cause body odour. The aroma that some associate with sweating, is in fact caused by bacteria if the sweat remains where it is for extended periods of time.

There are many factors which can stimulate excessive sweating:

  • Exercise

  • Heat or Cold

  • Alcohol, caffeine

  • Hot or spicy food

  • Stress, anxiety or strong emotions

  • Particular times in the day
